L.M. Sullivan, born about 1821 was likely typical of the ambitions and opportunities for southern White males to pursue the American dream by acquiring boundless land and sufficient slaves to earn a fortune for himself and his heirs. Whether directly related to slaves he owned or rather by virtue of other factors, the surname of Sullivan by his slaves is how we know and care that he existed, and quite likely married a cousin, M.L. Sullivan born in Virginia perhaps to same family of slaveowners that owned Richard Sullivan classified as Black and born in 1840.
