The fact of approximately 700
enlistments in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War by young men using
the surname of Edwards is cause for us to believe they believed Edwards was
their rightful name, and not a random choice made by former slaves after
emancipation and wars end. It is quite likely that upwards of seven
thousand African-Americans used the same surname after the war.
Edwards Generations so far we have
been able to determine obtained the surname "Edwards" from the lineage of Abel
Edwards who migrated from England around 1748 most likely in service to the
British crown government as a soldier or sailor.
